The fitness industry is constantly changing and evolving. There are numerous reasons for this, one of which is the fact that our society is (rightfully) becoming increasingly conscious of our need to concentrate on health. Physical fitness is no longer something that is acquired in the course of everyday life, for a large portion of the population. Our careers allow (or even require) a sedentary lifestyle. A lack of free time and, in many cases, relevant education, prevents us from cooking healthy meals from whole foods.
Companies selling convenience foods are all too willing to capitalize on that ignorance. They feed us fatty, sugary, starchy foods that provide an immediate sense of comfort, but far more calories and far fewer nutrients than we actually need to be healthy. It should come as no surprise, then, that the one factor that remains a constant topic of discussion is the consumption of protein. Protein has fewer calories per gram than fat and is more filling (and therefore less profitable for junk food salesmen) than carbohydrates. Many of us aren’t getting sufficient protein in our diets, and the lack of it is starting to be reflected in our overall levels of fitness.
What is protein exactly? Proteins are organic compounds that are present in all living things. They are found in every cell of the body and are needed to stimulate growth to patch up injured cells and tissue, as well as for an assortment of metabolic and hormonal undertakings. It is one of the three macronutrients essential to our health and well-being, the other two being fat and carbohydrates. Each of these macronutrients plays its own specialized role in the body. Protein’s primary role is the building and maintenance of muscle mass.
You might assume that convenience foods would want to include this very essential nutrient, in order to make their products more appealing, but you’d be incorrect. Why? Because, in addition to all of the good protein does for your body, it also has a very high satiety index. Research shows that foods high in protein and low in sugar and fat make us feel fuller, for longer, than foods high in carbohydrates or high in fat.
